(THE PASSIVE VOICE)
The sun attracts the planets.
Pushkin wrote “Poltava” in 1828.
The planets are attracted by the sun.
«Poltava» was written by Pushkin in 1828.
Времена страдательного залога образуются при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в соответствующем времени и формы причастия прошедшего времени (Past Participle) смыслового глагола. Таким образом, при спряжении глагола в страдательном залоге изменяется только глагол to be, смысловой же глагол имеет во всех временах одну и ту же форму - Past Participle. Следовательно, время, в котором стоит глагол в страдательном залоге, определяется формой, в которой стоит вспомогательный глагол to be;
Present Simple — I am invited
Present Continuous — I am being invited
Present Perfect – I have been invited
Past Simple – I was invited
Past Continuous – I was being invited
Past Perfect – I had been invited
Future Simple – I shall be invited
Future Perfect – I shall have been invited
Future-in-the-past Simple – I should be invited
Future-in-the-past Perfect – I should have been invited
Perfect Continuous.
Если вспомогательный глагол употребляется в сложной форме (shall be, have been и т. Shall I be invited? Have I been invited?
При образовании отрицательной формы частица not ставится после вспомогательного глагола: I am not invited. Если вспомогательный глагол употреблен в сложной форме (shall be, have been и т. I shall not be invited, I have not been invited.
Popov invented the radio in 1895.
The radio was invented by Popov in 1895.
а) дополнение действительного оборота (the radio) становится подлежащим в страдательном обороте;
б) глаголу в действительном залоге (invented) соответствует глагол в страдательном залоге в том же времени (was invented);
This bridge was built in 1956.
The paper was cut with a knife.
3. Сказуемому действительного оборота, выраженному сочетанием одного из модальных глаголов must, саn (could), may (might), should, ought, to have, to be с инфинитивом действительного залога, соответствует в страдательном обороте сочетание того же модального глагола с инфинитивом страдательного залога:
We must finish our work as soon as possible. (Мы должны закончить нашу работу как можно скорее) — Our work must be finished as soon as possible.
You can buy this book in any bookshop. (Вы можете купить эту книгу в любом книжном магазине) — This book can be bought in any bookshop (Эту книгу можно купить в любом книжном магазине).
They are to deliver the goods by the end of the month. (Они должны доставить товары к концу месяца) — The goods are to be delivered by the end of the month.
Present Simple
We use cranes for lifting heavy weights.
Cranes are used for lifting heavy weights.
Past Simple
The customs officers examined our luggage yesterday.
Our luggage was examined by the customs officers yesterday.
Future Simple
They will build the bridge next year.
The bridge will be built next year.
Future Simple in the Past
He said that they would build the bridge next year.
He said that the bridge would be built next year.
Present Continuous
They are discussing this question at the meeting.
This question is being discussed at the meeting.
Past Continuous
They were discussing this question when I entered the room.
This question was being discussed when I entered the room.
Present Perfect
He has just typed the letter.
The letter has just been typed.
Past Perfect
She showed me the article which her brother had translated.
She showed me the article which had been translated by her brother.
Future Perfect
I shall have translated the article by six o’clock.
The article will have been translated by six o’clock.
Future Perfect in the Past
I said that I should have translated the article by six o’clock.
I said that the article would have been translated by six o’clock.
Future Simple:
Come at 5 o’clock. The plan will be discussed at that time.
Past Perfect:
The plan has been discussed for two hours.
The plan had been discussed for two hours when he came.
The plan will be discussed at that time говорят: They will be discussing the plan at that time
или: The discussion of the plan will be going on at that time, The plan will be under discussion at that time.
The plan has been discussed for two hours говорят: They have been discussing the plan for two hours
или: The discussion of the plan has been going on for two hours, The plan has been under discussion for two hours.
The plan had been discussed for two hours when he came говорят: They had been discussing the plan for two hours when he came или:
The discussion of the plan had been going on for two hours when he came. The plan had been under discussion for two hours when he came.
The matter has been considered for a very long time. They have been considering the matter for a very long time
или: The consideration of the matter has been going on for a very long time. The matter has been under consideration for a very long time.
The bridge had been built for two months when we came.
They had been building the bridge for two months when we came, The construction of the bridge had been going on for two months when we came, The bridge had been under construction for two months when we came.
to be under discussion — обсуждаться,
to be under consideration рассматриваться,
to be under repair ремонтироваться,
to be under control контролироваться и т. п.
The ship is being repaired говорят: The ship is under repair.
The question was being discussed when they came говорят: The question was under discussion when they came и т. п.
I shall be very glad if your article is published in the newspaper.
The director will sign the documents when they are checked.
After the goods have been examined we shall take them to the warehouse.
Present |
Past |
Future |
|
Indefinite | The house is built. |
The house was built. |
The house will be built. |
Continuous | The house is being built. |
The house was being built. |

These papers were written by
one and the same author.

to make use (of)
to pay attention (to)
в сочетание, например, to make use
Use was made of
the following examples.

of.

Сложно-подчиненное предложение с главным предложением, выраженным безличным оборотом типа it is said - говорят, it is reported - сообщают, it seems - кажется, it is likely - вероятно , можно заменить простым предложением :
В простом предложении - They are said to know Chinese very well. – подлежащим к сказуемому are said является не одно местоимение they , а сочетание местоимения they с инфинитивом to know. (Nominative with the Infinitive).

Не is said to live
in Leningrad.

The motor-vessel "Smolny" is reported to
have arrived
in Odessa.
The motor-vessel "Smolny" which is reported
to have arrived in Odessa on Monday, brought a large
number of passengers.
The motor-vessel "Smolny" reported
to have arrived in Odessa on Monday, brought a large
number of passengers.

to arrive at the end
of the week. = It can be expected
that the ship
will arrive at the end of the week.

crop in the Ukraine this year. = It can be expected

The goods are reported by the sellers
to have
been shipped on Monday. = It is reported by the sellers
that the goods were shipped on Monday.

to be
She proved
(to be) very clever
.
(to be) a good engineer
.
Не proved to be
a historian
.
2. После
глаголов to seem и to appear
to be
seem и to appear
:
She seems
tired
.
ill
.
an experienced teacher
.
и Не seems to be ill
not
He doesn"t seem
to know this subject.
He didn"t prove
to be a very experienced engineer.
He didn"t happen
to be there at that time.
частица not
Не seems not to know
this subject.
He proved not to be
a very experienced engineer.
He happened not to be
there at that time.
to seem, to appear, to prove, to happen
всего с глаголом may
:
This story may seem
to be rather dull.
This picture may prove
to be the best at the
exhibition.
They may happen
to be at home at that time.
глаголами to seem, to appear, to prove, to happen
:
There seem
to be no changes in the trade relations
between these two countries. = It seems that there are
no changes in the trade relations between these two
countries.
There appears

news. = It appears that there is great excitement about

time. = It happened that there were many people there
at that time.
глаголов to seem и to appear
с предлогом to
стоит не непосредственно за глаголами to seem и to
appear
:
Не seems to me
to know English well. = It seems
to me that he knows English well.
She appeared to them
to have forgotten her promise.
= It appeared to them that she had forgotten her promise.
be
Не is likely
to know her address.= It is likely
that he knows her address.
They are very likely
to come soon. = It is very
likely that they will come soon.
.

в

to be asked about it.
предложениях частица not
He is not likely
to come today.
The price of copper is not likely
to rise in
the near future.
и sure
Не is certain not to come
to Moscow.
Не is sure not to be asked
about it.
likely
вместо глагола-связки to be
иногда употребляются глаголы to seem и to appear
:
They seem (appear) likely
to come soon. = It
seems (appears) likely that they will come soon.
The goods seem (appear) unlikely
to arrive at
the end of the week. = It seems (appears) unlikely that
the goods will arrive at the end of the week.

:

to be many changes in the plan.
= It is likely that there will be many changes in the
plan.

to be some objections to your

There are sure
to be many difficulties in solving
this question. = It is sure that there will be many
difficulties in solving this question.
The delegates who are likely to arrive tomorrow
will be lodged at this hotel.
с придаточным предложением who are likely to
arrive
встречается оборот likely to
arrive
The delegates likely to arrive
tomorrow will
be lodged at this hotel.
